The Estate Project

Every day is really World AIDS Day....but, in honor of December 1st as the World AIDS Day and in honor of the world's artists, I'm posting a link to The Estate Project, an effort whose work is, among other things, to preserve the cultural legacies of the "AIDS crisis" and to assist all artists with estate planning, especially those who are living with HIV/AIDS. This is a beautiful site--inspiring really-- featuring a registry of artists living with HIV, links to the works of artists, calls for materials, archival information, publications, and links to sites such as the visual aid site mentioned above.

This year the focus is on women and girls living with HIV
: International Women's Health Coalition (IWHC)
: Advocates for Youth.

Making Light: Slushkiller

During her talk at ALLGO, while she was in town for sharon's love conjure/blues, Lisa C. Moore of Redbone Press referred to this great piece, Making Light: Slushkiller, on Teresa Nielsen Hayden's blog.

It's a must read for all writers who've ever feared or experienced rejection of their manuscripts.

Added 2 December 2004:  Discussions during the workshop also included  who owns the media and  the estates of writers. Two good sites on these topics are PBS' "Merchants of Cool" and The Estate Project.

Austin, TX—In collaboration with community leaders, academics, students and artists, the tribute for Gloria Anzaldúa, surviving the battles, shaping our worlds, will take place October 22 & 23, 2004. Gloria Anzaldúa is best known for her landmark book Borderlands/La Frontera, which was significant in furthering Chicana lesbian critical studies.

surviving the battles, shaping our world will honor Anzaldúa's scholarship, writing and poetry within “new mestiza” and borderlands theory, and the ways she weaves these strands together. The tribute will honor her encouragement of other intellectuals, equally valuing those in academia and those doing other kinds of work (creative, intellectual, activist), her writing about sexuality, her brave enunciation of things that needed to be said, her status as an out lesbian, as well her influence in the visual arts, performance, and many other forms of activism.

Rememberin' June Jordan

From sharon bridgforth:

This will be a wonderful opportunity for us as a community to not only celebrate JUNE JORDAN’S Life
but to send rajasvini and dawn off on their travels to India and Kenya with poetry and love.

REMEMBERIN' JUNE JORDAN is a spoken word birthday commemoration curated by
local poet/activist, Rajasvini Bhansali.

The program includes local artists/writers honoring the
life and work of poet June Jordan, who died in 2002 at age 65, by reading
from her writings.

As one of the most widely published African-American
writers, Jordan provided a constant challenge to oppression.

The event is also a fundraiser for Red Salmon Arts, and definitely recommended. Fri.,
July 9, 7pm. Resistencia Bookstore, 1801-A S. First, 416-8885. $5.
